Travel Checklist: Los Islotes Sea Lions Photography Workshop

Remember, before embarking on any underwater photography adventure, ensure you have the necessary diving certifications, diving insurance, medical clearance, knowledge of safe diving practices, and an equipment carnet so you can easily enter the country with all your gear. As a participant in our workshops, you commit to protecting the marine environment and adhering to local regulations to preserve the beauty of this underwater world. Below is your travel checklist:

  1. Register for the workshop and agree to our Terms & Conditions.

  2. Book your hotel. There are many hotels to choose from in the area. A few recommendations are: Marine Waterfront Hotel (close to Dive Gurus), Seven Crown el Centro and Hotel Cathedral (close to bars and restaurants), Hyatt La Paz, and Hotel Costa Baja (upscale, have a resort feel, but farther outside of town).

  3. Book your flight to either Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) or Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP).

  4. Book yourself a private or shared shuttle from the airport to the hotel. We can also arrange this for you for a fee.

  5. Inform us of any dietary restrictions.

  6. Secure your travel insurance and dive insurance.

  7. Secure your medical clearance from your doctor.

  8. Please make arrangements to secure the photography equipment you intend to use for the trip. We are here to provide guidance and assistance along the way. If you plan on renting photography equipment, be sure to reserve it for the appropriate dates to ensure availability.

  9. To ensure a hassle-free entry into the country with your camera and diving equipment, it is advisable to obtain an equipment carnet. The most reliable carnet companies are the ones located at the airport from where you are departing. If your flight includes stops at Atlanta (ATL), Dallas (DFW), or Los Angeles (LAX), carnet companies are available at those airports.

  10. Pay your final balance. While we have installment plans, your final payment is due 70 days prior to the workshop.

  11. You will receive a travel checklist and packing suggestions closer to the date of the workshop.

  12. Pack your bags, your dive certification, and other important documents.

  13. Check one thing off your bucket list!

BEN AND MARVI’S GEAR RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Sony a1 Mirrorless Camera
    B&H Photo | Amazon

    Sony a7R V Mirrorless Camera
    B&H Photo | Sony | B&H Photo

    Sony a6600 Mirrorless Camera
    B&H Photo | Amazon

    GoPro HERO11
    B&H Photo | Amazon

As Sony Ambassadors, we are preferential to using Sony Cameras. We can help each student work through the Sony menu system, but any camera system you choose is up to you. Point-and-shoot cameras are always an option but remember that they are harder to use with underwater strobes, and they do not have the best overall image quality compared to mirrorless or DSLR cameras.

Also, consider a small action camera like a GoPro, which is waterproof ~10 meters to mount to your head or anywhere else to record video of your time underwater.

  • Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM Lens
    B&H Photo | Sony | Amazon

Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Lens
    B&H Photo | Sony | Amazon

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens
    B&H Photo | Sony | Amazon

For capturing sea lions, options can vary depending on your comfort level of proximity to wildlife. Consider a 12-24mm or 16-35mm. Many expensive lenses come with an f/2.8 aperture, which is not always necessary for underwater image-making (more during the class) but may add to versatility on land. Consider a lens with an f/4 aperture; they tend to be smaller, lighter, and more affordable. A longer telephoto lens like the 70-200 works well if you want to photograph sea lions from the boat.

  • Sea&Sea YS-D3
    Amazon

    Ikelite DS162 TTL
    B&H Photo

Underwater lighting is crucial to overcome the loss of color and contrast at depth. Certainly, we can correct some issues during post-production, but it is best to start with an optimal image. Invest in a reliable set of underwater strobes that will sync with your camera. Choose one with adjustable power settings for better control of light intensity.

You have the option of using constant light sources for stills and video, but these may frighten off underwater mammals or be present in other photographers’ images.

Remember, depending on the manufacture of your underwater housing - you may need to buy an optional bulkhead that will allow you to connect the strobe cables to your camera.

  • A sturdy and well-fitting housing is essential to protect your camera from water damage. Ensure it is compatible with your camera model and allows easy access to controls.

Higher end housings include models by Nauticam (which we use) - which can be used for very deep dives and are made for each specific camera.

    Nauticam Housing for A1

    Nauticam Housing for A7rV

    Nauticam Housing for a6600

More moderately priced models by Ikelite:

    Ikelite Housing for Sony A1
    B&H Photo

    Ikelite Housing for Sony A7rV
    B&H Photo

    Ikelite Housing for Sony A6600
    B&H Photo

We can always help each client make the best choice of housing and cameras for their needs. We can also help source a rental house if clients do not want to commit to buying a housing.

Options in the US include Backscatter and Reef Photo

  • Lens Ports

Depending on your lens choices, you may need specific lens ports for the housing to accommodate different focal lengths. This would be specific to the Housing manufacturer you choose. Typical wide angle lenses will require a large glass or acrylic dome port.

    Ikelite Port Chart

If one was using the Sony A1 and the 16-35 f4 lens - you would need the Ikelite housing and a dome port an extension tube and a zoom mechanism:

    Ikelite DL 8" Dome Port

    B&H Photo

    Ikelite DL 42mm Port Extension

    B&H Photo

    Ikelite 5509.25 Zoom Gear

    B&H Photo

Nauticam Port Chart for use with their A1 Housing

If you are using the Sony A1 and the 16-35 f4 lens, you would need the Nauticam housing and a dome port, port adapter, extension tube, and zoom ring:

Nauticam 230mm Optical-Glass Fisheye Dome Port II

Nauticam N100 To N120 35.5mm Port Adaptor II

Nauticam N120 Extension Ring 60 II

    Nauticam SE1635-Z Zoom Gear

As you can see, there is a lot of equipment to get, so keep the lens choice simple - you really only need one.

  • Batteries and Chargers

Bring extra batteries for your camera, strobe, and any other electronic devices you use. Don't forget to pack the necessary chargers and adapters suitable for the local power outlets.

    Memory Cards

Ensure you have sufficient storage space by carrying multiple high-capacity memory cards. Opt for fast and reliable cards to avoid any data loss or recording interruptions.

    Camera Cleaning Kit

Underwater photography can expose your gear to saltwater, sand, and other elements. Pack a camera cleaning kit containing a blower brush, lens cloth, lens cleaner, and other tools to keep your equipment clean and free from debris.

    Processing and Storage

    Apple 14" MacBook Pro
    B&H Photo | Amazon

LaCie 2TB Rugged External Hard Drive
    B&H Photo | Amazon

Bring a laptop computer with an external hard drive for editing and storing images. Consider optional photo editing software. We will work with Adobe products (which use a subscription payment model), but you can also consider one-off purchases from Mac or Google App stores such as Affinity Photo.

You'll also have free time to explore the town and go shopping.

  • Depending on where you’re flying out of, the closest airports to La Paz are Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP) or Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), the latter being a two-hour drive to La Paz.

  • To enter Mexico, the government requires a valid passport, a completed migratory form (distributed on the plane), and an equipment carnet (refer to your travel checklist above). Mexican immigration officers at the port of entry may request additional documents depending on the purpose/activity of your trip. For more information, please refer to the Mexican government website HERE.

  • There are many hotels to choose from in the area. A few recommendations are the Hyatt La Paz, Hotel Costa Baja, Hotel Cathedral, and the Hotel Marine Waterfront. However, if you wish to save and opt for double occupancy, please let us know by sending an email to info@capturequests.com, and we will reach out to other workshop participants wanting a roommate.

  • To fully participate in this workshop, you will require an underwater camera. However, the choice of camera depends on your preferences as a photographer. A compact option like a GoPro offers convenience and is lightweight, but it leans more towards video capabilities and has limited manual controls. On the other hand, both a point-and-shoot camera in a housing and a high-end digital camera in a housing are suitable choices. However, it's worth noting that the former may not support external strobe attachment. Ultimately, the decision should align with your budget and comfort level. The technical attributes (vs. artistic quality) of your images will be influenced by your camera, lens, and strobe choices. Please refer to our recommended options for further guidance.

  • This workshop is geared towards all photography and diving skill level.

  • We will abide by the Mexican government regulations when it comes to Covid-19. We ask that you obtain medical clearance for diving from your doctor as well as obtain the necessary diving and travel insurance.

  • For diving workshops, divers are required to present proof of certification to the minimum level required before participating in any dive activities. Please bring your certification card with you, whether it be plastic or digital. If you are unable to provide proof of certification, you will not be able to dive and may forfeit your tuition paid. Students will be required to read and sign the Standard Safe Diving Practices Statement of Understanding before they start their dive/snorkel trip.

  • CaptureQuests and the Dive Gurus prioritize safety during diving activities and strive to prevent injuries. It is advisable to ensure you have appropriate travel and scuba diving insurance coverage for travel if you plan to participate. While certain travel insurance may include scuba diving coverage, others may not. Numerous scuba diving insurance providers are available, with Divers Alert Network (DAN) being one of the well-known options for international travel.
